You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby
March 05, 2017In fact we’ve come such a long way it’s probably not wise to call anyone baby, “baby.”
It’s true, we’ve collectively traveled far since the Seneca Falls Convention where Elizabeth Cady Stanton radically added two simple words to the Declaration of Independence:“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”
What seems readily apparent today was nothing short of shocking in 1848.
This subversive correction to claim equality for all would take the Suffragettes 72 years before it finally bore the fruit which gave women the right which ensures all other rights, the right to vote.One hundred and sixty-nine years later we still seem puzzled over the power of gender as it relates to individual rights. What is equality? What right do we have to say the things others don’t want to hear? When does harmless sexual harassment become flirting and when does harmless flirting become sexual harassment?
Why, in such an ‘enlightened’ era as ours is the battle of the sexes still raging after endless centuries spent by our ancestors struggling to solve it?
Maybe sex is so fraught with peril because time, after time, we as female, male, and other… must be reminded that there is no winning when it comes to equality. Maybe it’s Nature’s design that for equality there must always be a struggle. Maybe it’s the struggle that sets us free?
We live in an era today where the politics of sexual identity has so much energy contained within it that to split it open is to unleash enough force to make any relationship glow in the dark.
While our upcoming romantic comedy THE THREAT OF SEX offers no definite answers to these eternal riddles, it will make you laugh at how ridiculously tied up we all get trying to navigate them. Give us a chance to entertain you with questions worth puzzling over!
