When cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead (1901-1978) sailed for Samoa to do fieldwork, she sent her first husband a farewell letter that said ‘I’ll not leave you unless I find someone I love more.’ Unfortunately for him, she did… on the boat coming home. Mead ultimately married and divorced three times, but her longest relationship was with colleague Rhoda Metraux, with whom she lived for 22 years.
