Revolutionary War soldier Robert Shurtlieff was actually 20-year-old Deborah Sampson (1760-1827), who disguised herself as a man in order to fight. During her 17 months of service, she was teased by fellow soldiers for her lack of facial hair; wounded in battle (digging a musket ball out of her own thigh with a penknife so that medics would not discover her secret), promoted to the general’s staff; and finally exposed when a doctor treated her for a high fever.
