Pioneering American journalist Nellie Bly (1864-1922) got her start after reading a misogynistic newspaper column called ‘What Girls Are Good For.’ Outraged, she fired off an anonymous rebuttal to the newspaper’s editor — who then placed an ad asking the author to identify herself. When Bly came forward, the editor offered her a job writing for his paper.
