Illiterate ex-slave Isabella Baumfree changed her name to Sojourner Truth (c. 1797-1883) and began traveling the country as an abolitionist and women’s rights activist. At one speech, a heckler interrupted the strapping Truth (who stood 6′ tall) and accused her of being a man. She responded by calmly opening her blouse to reveal her breasts.
