Escaped slave and abolitionist Harriet Tubman (c. 1820-1913) carried a revolver on her trips for the Underground Railroad. The gun primarily served as protection against slave catchers and their dogs, but she also threatened to shoot any weak-willed slave who jeopardized the group’s safety by trying to turn back. ‘You go on or die,’ she claimed to have told one such runaway.
