Caribbean-American writer Audre Lorde (1934-1992) was mute until the age of five. When Lorde finally did begin to speak, she expressed herself largely by reciting poems she had memorized. She began writing her own poetry in adolescence, publishing her first poem in SEVENTEEN Magazine in 1951.
