British activist Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928) led the Women’s Social and Political Union, a militant all-female organization campaigning for women’s right to vote. Its motto was ‘Deeds not words,’ and those deeds included sending letter bombs, cutting telephone wires, smashing windows, assaulting police officers, and burning unoccupied buildings. Clearly Mrs. Pankhurst was no one to mess with.
