Bridget Bishop (c. 1632-1692), the first person executed during the Salem Witch Trials, was hanged for ‘certaine Detestable Arts called Witchcraft & Sorceries.’ Bishop was an easy target when the witch hysteria began, because this thrice-married woman operated two taverns, fought publicly with her husbands, dressed flamboyantly, drank alcohol, and played forbidden games such as shuffleboard. In other words, Bishop didn’t much care what straitlaced Puritan society thought of her, and she paid a steep price for her unconcern. We salute you, Bridget, and we’re sorry they killed you for being different.
