A brutal murder provided a financial windfall to British suffragette Christabel Pankhurst (1880-1958). In 1949, serial killer John George Haigh murdered wealthy widow Olivia Durand-Deacon and dissolved her body in an acid bath; when the victim’s will was read, it included a 250-pound annuity to Pankhurst. There was no known connection between Durand-Deacon and Pankhurst, and the reason for the bequest remains a mystery; however, the annual sum allowed Pankhurst to live comfortably for the rest of her life.
